The Future? of the
Adyar Theosophical Society
Without
Leadership
Nobody sees it, Nobody
hears from it.
Is it hiding
somewhere? Does it exist?
By
Dave Marsland
Things have moved
quite quickly since the
General Council
retired from the game.
It will be difficult
to come back.
AND
What about the
Presidential Candidates?
Nominated by
non-existent leadership
Not a good reference
How do we know you’re the real
president if the election process can’t be trusted?
This will be a fair question
to ask the new president if the General Council fails to address current
concerns about the integrity of the election process. The candidates themselves
must see this one coming.
Why has the leadership
allowed this situation to arise when it could have put safeguards in place to
head off any problems? Why is the leadership allowing the situation to fester?
What’s the answer?
The answer is that the Adyar Theosophical
Society doesn’t have a leadership, and the one that it thought it had, has
abdicated its responsibility because it can’t deal with the vested interests
that now dominate the Society’s affairs.
We have a situation in which
the members haven’t heard from the General Council for months. During this time
control of the Adyar Headquarters has been lost to a small elite who appoint
family members to run the place, while the General Council are nowhere to be
seen. Control of the Adyar publishing facility has now gone to the Adyar power
elite and this will prove decisive in determining who runs the Society in the
future. This power over Adyar Headquarters and publishing is unlikely to be
relinquished and it is not surprising that the General Council members haven’t
shown their faces, and prefer to hide under the table.
The ineffectiveness of the
General Council has given the new president three disadvantages;
Firstly, as the General
Council has run away and hidden from the difficulties facing the Society and
allowed opportunists to take over, the new president will have no power and
will only be able to act with the approval of the Society’s new controllers.
Secondly, members no longer
trust the election process and doubts about the legitimacy of the president
will always haunt him. This alone could cause sections to split from the
Society.
Lastly, the General Council
has proved itself to be not fit for purpose, and any prospective leader
nominated by this body is tarred with the same brush. This is especially true
as both candidates appear to have cowered under the table along with the
General Council while control of the Society has been lost, and the election
process has run out of control.
The General Council’s lack of
leadership has simply served to bring the Adyar Theosophical Society closer to
break-up. But whatever happens, members can be sure that the General Council
won’t be there to deal with it.

This is only an
